Get paid to care for family
The care you give shouldn’t cost you your income
Through Michigan’s Medicaid Home Help Program, family members and trusted friends can be hired, trained, and paid to provide the personal care their loved one already needs.
- Adult children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends can qualify as paid caregivers.
- Medicaid funds the pay — there is no cost to the family being cared for.
- We handle enrollment, payroll, and paperwork so you can focus on care.
Typical caregiver pay
*Spouses and legal guardians of the person receiving care are generally not eligible to be the paid caregiver. Hours and pay are set by the State based on assessed need.

- Needs help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or meals
- Lives at home in the community — any age, not just seniors
The caregiver
- Can be a relative or trusted friend (not the spouse or legal guardian)
- Passes a criminal background check
- Is legally able to work in the United States

Common questions
Answers for Michigan families
How much does the caregiver get paid?
Pay is funded by Michigan Medicaid and typically starts around $17.50+ per hour. The exact rate and the number of covered hours are set by the State based on the care recipient’s assessed needs.
Does this cost my family anything?
No. For eligible Medicaid recipients, Home Help is funded by the State — there is no out-of-pocket cost to the family for the covered care.
Can I really get paid to care for my own parent?
Yes. Most relatives — adult children, grandchildren, and siblings — as well as trusted friends can be hired and paid as caregivers. Spouses and the person’s legal guardian are generally not eligible to be the paid caregiver.
How long does it take to get started?
It depends on Medicaid eligibility and the state assessment, but many families move from first call to approved care within a few weeks. We keep the process moving and handle the paperwork for you.
What if my loved one isn’t on Medicaid yet?
We can still help. We’ll point you in the right direction to check eligibility and apply — qualifying for Medicaid is the first step to the Home Help benefit.
